Lawn Care Business – Last Chance to Make Money in 2011

Lawn Care Business - How to make money at Christmas

Lawn Care Business - How to make money at Christmas

Well here we are. 2012 is knocking on our doors as 2011 withers to a close. If you are in the lawn care industry, you have one last chance to pad your end of year revenue figures before the calendar year closes.

Since Christmas 2011 is on a Sunday, next week (December 19 – December 23) is a PRIME week to contact all your current lawn care clients. Prepare a 30 second sales presentation to let them know that you are offering last minute yard cleanup services. Tell your lawn care customers that you are available for one last pre-Christmas mowing, leaf raking, shrubbery bed maintenance, gutter cleaning or (for those of you in snowy areas) snow removal.

I have tried this strategy many years. Most years, more than 50% of my clients have had last minute lawn care related jobs for my lawn company to perform. Not only have my lawn care clients been thankful that I am willing to come out for a last minute “rush” job, they have been willing to pay a premium price and sometimes even through in an end-of-year Christmas bonus.

Imagine if you have 40 lawn care clients and you can sell 50% of them a $50 lawn care related service during the final week before Christmas. If you can do that, you will make your lawn care company an additional $1000. Most lawn care business owners I know can use an extra grand at Christmastime.

Though 2011 is at an end 2012 is about to begin and springtime will be here before you know it. If you are interested in starting a lawn care business, consider purchasing our lawn care business training course. The course is packed with very useful information and business tools designed to help you start and operate a successful lawn care business. The course also includes a VERY USEFUL series of estimating calculators that will help you determine your lawn care pricing.

Starting a Lawn Care Business During Winter (December, January, February)

Hi Everyone:

This is Keith from SALCB.

If you have ever thought about starting a lawn care business or if you currently own a lawn care company and are thinking about expanding your business in the coming year, the next few months (December, January, and February) are target rich months for: performing winter cleanup jobs for your current customers, purchasing used and last year’s model LC equipment, securing new (larger scale) contracts.

Additionally, the customers you acquire during the winter months will be your first customers once spring rolls around. This will give you a solid customer base to grow your business.

Don’t ignore the next few months. You can still make a lot of money during the winter and you will be ready to go in the spring.

My company started our lawn care company 1992. We started small and grew rapidly. We have developed a professionally produced lawn care business guidebook and estimating software package. If you are having problems starting your business, acquiring customers, choosing equipment, doing the work properly and efficiently, and estimating your prices, visit our website to learn more about the lawn care business program.

The Last Few Lawn Mowing Cycles Of The Year

Lawn Mowing End of Season

Lawn Mowing End of Season Mowing Cycles

The first half of September has passed us by and we are now into the last days of summer.  September 23, 2011 marks the official end of summer and the beginning of Fall.

For much of the country, there are still a few more mowing cycles to perform for your customers.  Of course, our friends in Florida will be mowing and mowing long after our friends in Minnesota (and our readers in Canada) are covered in snow.  Still, if you want to make money in lawn care (no matter where you are located in the country) you still have a few months to get rolling with your own lawn care business.

For the rest of you in the more temperate sections of the country, make the most of these last few mowing cycles.  Take extra time to mow well and trim to perfection.  Your customers will truly remember & appreciate your extra attention to their lawns right now.  They will be more likely to call you back in the springtime if you leave them with great looking lawns as the mowing season winds down.

Of course, if you want to run your business year-round and make money all 12 months, we have included a GREAT “guide to running your business through the winter months” in our lawn care business training guidebook.  You will be surprised how easy it is to sell customers add-on services through the colder months.  Providing lawn care and non-lawn care services during the winter months is very important.  Not only does it allow you to make additional money during the slower months but it also means you will keep your customers active and they will be raring to go once springtime rolls around again.

Add Snow Removal To Your Lawn Care Business

Having live in the southeast United States most of my life I’ve never experienced much snowfall relative to the amounts of snow experienced by our friends in the northern states.  For the last few years, however, I have been spending more of my winter “downtime” far north of the Mason-Dixon line.

In fact, I’ve been closer to the Canadian border than the 40th parallel for much of the past 3 winters.  Being in that part of the country forces a person to think about adding snow plowing to their list of lawn care services.

Many of the readers of this blog have asked why we don’t add more content dedicated to snowplowing as an add-on service to the lawn care industry.  We listen to our readers and we’re definitely going to add more snow plowing content in the coming weeks.

Please tune in often and subscribe to our blog feed.

Winter's Solstice & Lunar Eclipse – December 21, 2010

I believe most landscapers are more akin to the natural world than the average citizen.  We feel the earth in our hands on a daily basis and understand the yearly dance amongst the earth, sun, and moon.  The cycles of each year are predictable far in advance and we know that the care we put into our lawns and landscapes right now will have far reaching affects once the growing season is upon us.

Similar to next years growing season cycle, the cycles of the earth, sun, and moon are predictable far in advance.  Tonight, a couple of the earth – moon – sun cycles reach a pinnacle.  December 21, 2010 marks the northern hemisphere’s Winter Solstice.   Tonight also features a full moon which is accentuated by a lunar eclipse.

As you’re preparing for your holiday celebration with your family and friends, I hope you can take a few minutes to nip outside in the early morning hours and view the eclipse near totality.

November Rains Bring Lawn Care Pains

by: Start a Lawn Care Business

Ouch! My neck hurts.

No, it doesn’t hurt because of a recent car crash or an old football injury.  It hurts (figuratively) because I’m getting whipsawed back and forth with this November weather.

November weather is notoriously fickle in the southeast and this November’s weather is no exception.  Two weeks ago, we had freezing overnight lows, last week we were into the high 70’s with cloudless skies, and this week is starting on a bleary note with showers and highs in the mid-40’s.

Ahh, November, it keeps life interesting for a lawn care professional.

As much as you might like to complain about the weather, I hope you realize what a blessing November weather is for your lawn care company.  For instance, if you are in the southeast, last week was a perfect time to aerate and overseed all your customer’s lawns before this rainy spell kicked in.  Aeration before seeding allows perfect seed-ground contact.  Seeds will have a great oportunity to germinate and set roots as the rains moisten the soil before harsh winter weather.

We are already hearing from many of our readers in the North and their issues with the first snow plowing jobs of the season.  And, as always, sunny south Florida and Texas are the envy of us all being able to mow practically year-round.

No matter in what part of the country you reside, November weather brings its challenges.  However, if you play it right, November can be a very profitable month for your lawn care business.

Don’t forget, if you need to learn how to properly price-estimate all your lawn care customers, pick up a copy of our lawn care estimating software on our main web page:  www.StartALawnCareBusiness.com

Goodbye Summer. Hello Autumn.

I am sure many of you noticed that Wednesday, September 22, 2010 was the Autumnal Equinox. This year’s full Harvest Moon rang in the new season.

Temperature wise there was not much of a change as we are still reaching the low to mid 90’s each day. However, there is a chill in the air once the sun sets. The sky is golden and the leaves are definitely changing. Though summer is over, I hope you are weighing your options carefully for the upcoming season. Here in the southeast we have had scant showers the last 6 weeks. I am sure the lack of precipitation will change as weather patterns will alter in the near future. Autumn rains will bring bursts of growth as parched lawns rejuvenate for one last chlorophyll-laden green up before winter arrives.

Lawn care business owners who are prepared will be able to take advantage of their customers’ need for “one last mow.” In reality, one last mow can easily turn into 4 or 5 mowing cycles with plenty of leaf raking and winterizing jobs.

Though the sun is climbing lower on the horizon, there’s still money to be made, guys. Now is not a time to get lazy. If you hustle, you can put some much needed money in the bank in the months before winter.

Do you want to know how to keep your lawn care business running all winter long?  Our lawn care business training course shows you how to make money even during the cold months.

Is September Too Late To Start A Lawn Mowing Business?

http://www.StartALawnCareBusiness.com
Start A Lawn Care Business

September is here and we are finally due for some relief from the blistering hot weather and the dry grass that August brought us. August is typically a difficult time of year for many lawn care companies. Lawn care customers who pay by-the-mow will often ask for their lawn service to be curtailed to every two weeks. Additionally, the weather is so miserably hot that it makes working outside a less-than-desirable experience. Many fly-by-night lawn care operators drop out during August thinking that the lawn care season is over for the year.

If you are a lawn care business owner or if you are thinking about starting your own lawn care business, I want to challenge you to step up to the plate right now and make a huge push forward in your lawn care business.

First off, grass in much of the country is about to surge. The cooler weather and, hopefully, rain that will come in September will cause grass to green up. In my part of the country we often mow grass all the way into December. Many customers have “one last cutting” right before Christmas. If you are in the north you probably won’t mow that long but if you are in the southern states you are going to be mowing deep into winter.

Secondly, right now is the time you better be selling core aeration, fertilizing, and overseeding. It’s a bit too early as I’m writing this to do the actual work but you should be lining up customers for those jobs right now. Customers who want beautiful lawns next spring should be made aware of the importance of work that needs to take place before winter.

Lastly, leaf raking season is in its very beginning days. There is no time like the present to ramp up your lawn care business to handle the influx of customers demanding your services over the next few months. I feel sorry for the guys who quit their lawn care businesses in August because they weren’t making money. September, October, and November is going to MORE than make up for any money lost in August.

So, if you are struggling with your lawn care business or if you thinking about starting a new lawn care business, it is a great time to get off your butt and get to work. The money and the customers are yours for the asking over the next three months.

Now, as lucrative as Autumn is, you still need to use some common sense and business smarts when doing these leaf jobs and pre-winter lawn care work. It is hyperimportant for you to know how to estimate and bid your lawn care jobs. Underbidding a leaf job will kill you.

So, if you are going to be making money raking leaves this season, I urge you to look at our Lawn Care Business startup guidebook and training package. We have developed this training package after 18 years in the industry. It will train you how to do the work, get customers, and most importantly correctly bid and price your lawn care services.

Leaf Relief – Leaf Raking Season Is Upon Us

Lawn Care is a seasonal business.  Luckily for us, there’s money to be made all seasons of the year.

We are in peak leaf raking season.  Leaves are still falling off the trees and customers who vowed to wait for all the leaves to fall before doing their raking are calling urgently to get their yards cleaned up before winter sets in.

leafrelief

I have been associated with the lawn care industry since 1992 and it never ceases to amaze me how much money can be made the last two months of the year dealing with customer’s leaves.

I love when prospective customers try to rake their own leaves.  Sure, in a small yard the homeowner can deal with the leaves.  But, in yards with several sweet gum trees, the volume of leaves can be overwhelming and they call us in as a last attempt to get the leaves handled.

Since they already know what hard work leaf raking is, they don’t put up too much of a fight to pay a premium price to clear their yards once and for all.

Leaf raking season between Thanksgiving and the end of the year is a blessing also because it gives a great chance to boost your bottom line for the year and put some extra spending money in your pocket before Christmas.

We’ve put a video on YouTube giving a couple leaf raking tips if you are using a tarp to haul and dump your leaves, check our video below:
